Mount Grace Road Area

Looking across to Stonebow Bridge

Since the estate was completed in 1998 I have met with residents individually and collectively many times. There have been a number of issues listed below, but above all I've been keen to protect Stonebow Washlands. This is not just an important habitat but its a fine little country park for residents.

Other Local Matters

Neighbourhood watch is also a good forum for getting your views and requests across, in the first instance to the Police. Watch groups have been very successful in helping neighbours to co-operate to protect their homes. If you would like to know if a group operates in your street get in touch with me.

The estate was built without a children's playground. After researching this with residents we found out that the playground was intended for the corner of Byland Way and Gisborough Way. The planners failed to secure this in the planning process and sadly we could not stop the owners building on it.

I lobbied Royal Mail to get the Post Box installed early in the life of the estate. Should this or its neighbouring grey box be subject to graffiti let me know or get in touch with Royal Mail Collection in Leicester directly.

Motorcycles and mopeds may be handy forms of transport maybe but, they can also be machines from Hades ridden by outlaws intent on destroying a peaceful summer evening.

As far as the motorcycling behind Stonebow School is concerned, After various meetings with the Police and Peter DeLisle, the land owner, some improvement has happened. The local Police have had a number of blitzes and now treat it much more seriously.

The nearest bus service, the No 12, follows a figure of 8 route from Derby Road, Dishley, Maxwell Drive, Buckingham Drive, Knightthorpe and then via the Town Centre again to Shelthorpe and back to Derby Road etc. The bus company, Kinch, now owned by Bartons, have been very responsive and we have asked them to review their routes to see if the full length of Maxwell Drive can be served.
This will be happening once the building opposite has been completed.

Some people have asked who is responsible for paved areas

up to houses beyond the formal highway. The surest way is to check your deeds. It's a good idea to have a photo copy even if they are held by your solicitor and/or building society. You can also obtain a copy from the land registry in Leicester. However, it is also useful to understand what exactly the Council highways department intend to adopt.

The Name of the Roads

Many people know that Mount Grace Road was named after a ruined Yorkshire Abbey. The developer's idea was to name all the roads after monastic churches of the Middle Ages which were destroyed with in the 16th century; Garendon Abbey being the local Cistercian example. The Planning Committee thought it a good choice and here is the full list. Most are worth visiting.
