The New Ashby Road area

I meet regularly with the Ashby Road Estates Community Association (ARECA) to discuss issues and concerns and then follow up any complaints. I am also working with Cllrs Bradshaw, Ian Ashcroft and Nat Taylor on the priorities for the area:
  • Raising standards for kitchens and bathrooms for all Council tenants.
  • Creating a safer community. Working in multi-agency surgeries with police, businesses and council services.
  • More play and pitch facilities and support from youth workers.
  • Keep county lines out.
  • Other matters include parking, recreation and sport, local schools and NHS services.
The hub of activity is the Hut and the shops on Sharpley Road. Since being elected to represent the area on the County Council I have secured the tenancy of this community building at a peppercorn rent. I would particularly like to thank ARECA, local groups like Green Fingers and highways officers of the county for their help.

I have organised an audit of several of the traffic problems in the area with County traffic engineers to whom the community is grateful. I have a good relationship with Booth Wood Primary School but they find it very difficult to persuade parents to park without inconveniencing others or to abandon cars altogether.
I am in touch with other primary and secondary schools on Thorpe Hill on issues relating to travel to school and pick-ups and always ready to make representations to the County Council.
I meet with the Heads of both Charnwood College and DeLisle RC College.

I have made successful representations to retain the Post Office and Pharmacy, I also value the general store and take-aways at Hermitage Shopping Centre and the SPAR and hairdresser on Old Ashby Road.

The Borough Councillors and I monitor all planning applications in the area. Our particular concern is the increasing number of permits to turn family homes into Houses in Multiple Occupation.
