Old Ashby Road area

Booth Wood and the Burleigh Way

This is an area badly need of protection and care. The Charnwood Wildlife have devised a management plan to achieve this which has not received universal agreement. The bluebells are however about to bloom whilst serious threats still exist from people causing criminal damage. This threat extends to Burleigh College playing fields. The Neighbourhood Watch Group has been extremely effective in reporting incidents and ensuring action.

Another area which concerns us is the Burleigh Way old railway track. This is again a sensitive area. A lot of people use it yet it also needs careful natural management. We have now achieved a better (not perfect) cleansing regime but now we are faced with ever higher growing hawthorn. This will have to be cut sometime, perhaps layered, causing a drastic, though temporary, change in outlook.
In the longer term the Borough has this marked out in the Borough Local Plan as a cycle route from Pitsford Drive all the way to town. Before this happens I have called for the fullest consultation. Whether the surface is gravel or tarmac, lit or unlit and how it is maintained are all important questions. Burleigh Way on a wet day!

Local Shops

Besides the SPAR and hairdressers, we have a Post Office, Pharmacy and further shops at Hermitage Road. After previous closures of chemists and post officres, not to mention butchers and bakers, I'm very keen for these shops to thrive. To a large extent its in our hands. Using local shops helps them help us and is also a greener alternative than going out in the car!

Old Ashby Road

The Old Ashby Road was traffic calmed to slow traffic as it emerges from the motorway and as it travels past the schools. It's vital artery for buses and local traffic.

An exhibition was held at Burleigh College Community Lounge in 1999 the Borough's Traffic Regulation Order Sub-Committee agreed a modified proposal. The Borough Council Highways engineers have also asked for a traffic light to be installed at the east bound entrance from the A512, in order to dissuade M1 traffic taking this route when the A512 lights are red. I have asked for attention to be given to the danger still presented to children crossing at the chicane on Thorpe Hill. Engineers have agreed that the chicane should be removed and replaced with a pelican/toucan crossing. We are just waiting for this to happen. Many thanks to all those who wrote to me over this.

Following the traffic calming works we are asking the County Council to lift the 'No Right Turn' restriction at the Pitsford Drive end, since this disincentive to through traffic should no longer be required if the traffic calming works as intended. This has now been done and I'm very pleased with the result.
