Housing in Ashby Ward

On behalf of many residents I have challenged the need to change a family homes into Houses in Multple Occupation (HMO) on the Ashby Road Estate. Why is this?

It's simple, this estate is a close community, but as neighbours pass on, they are often replaced by temporary residents who share a house with others, residents no longer know each other as they used to and the new residents in the HMOs usually stay only a few months. Not surprisingly temporary residents don't feel they have a stake in the community and often look to the university rather than the locality.
There have been practical difficulties too, when one HMO can have up to five cars. Extensions can be built which puts neighbours in the shade, and recycling procedures need to be learnt each time residents change.

My response has been to say that the town now has an excess of accommodation for students, in particular. A new Hall of Residence for 600 students was completed on the campus in 2019 and the town centre is bubbling with Purpose Built Student Accommodation (PBSAs).

I put my argument to the Council in their latest consultation as follows. Submission to Charnwood council to prevent more family homes being turned into HMOs.

I support the HMO Additional Licensing scheme to improve the quality os student housing by Charnwood Borough Council.

I am working with the University to strengthen the blue sign parking scheme, which persuades visitors not to park on residential streets in the general areas of New Ashby Road and Garendon Road.
