Maxwell Drive area

  • Gorse Covert Shopping Centre & Community Centre: We have a good shopping centre in Gorse Covert. Safeways has improved and is responsive to local demand. The Community Centre is run by a Warden, Mike Hamilton, and staff who are employed by the County Council. The Gorse Covert Community Association runs the Centre and they have an Annual General Meeting to elect the committee every year in September.
  • Road Safety on Maxwell Drive: Following a strong campaign to slow traffic on Maxwell Drive the Borough Council, as Agents for the County, has fitted 'traffic cushions' along the length of the road. I have had very mixed reactions to this and would be pleased to hear views on details of the work or on new traffic patterns which may have developed as a result.
  • The Brook: The Black Brook flows from Shepshed Mill to Dishley Mill and contains a good stock of little fish and invertebrates. It's worth protecting. The concrete walls along the brook from Jubilee Park to Dishley Mill are reckoned to be highly unfriendly to wildlife and I have seen this watercourse cited in textbooks to that effect. The Environment Agency have a plan to convert the brook back to its previous meandering state but since this will cost several thousands of pounds I am sceptical that it will happen. The old bridge off Sandringham Drive could, nevertheless be restored in part to enhance the area. What do you think? Please tell me
  • Gorse Covert: This is maintained by Charnwood Borough Council for local people. The wood itself is maintained with the help of volunteers and Charnwood Wildlife. If you have any comments, please tell me or wildlife@charnwoodbc.gov.uk
