Hathern Village
- Village Appraisal
The Pasture Lane Playground scheme has been set back by. Ken's been very helpful - but
she was also hoping for some county funding. She needs ~£40K - the PC's put
£5K in to get things started. There's a bit on the Hathern website.
The A6 through the village is a very dangerous road. The
40mph limit is inadequate especially since many vehicles go faster. Kegworth has a
30 limit, special road markings; pedestrian controlled lights and a speed
camera. Athough the A6 doesn't go through the centre of Hathern quaite as it does in Kegworth,
many people still need to cross it anf there is no need for speed.
I would support an Action Group to present ideas for the calming of the A6.
There are many imaginative schemes to examine, not all of which are necessarily expensive.
Remember, Hathern came 2nd in the 'Best Kept Village' competition and there are a
great many people who care for the village and who need support.
These include those doing ordinary things like the litter sweep, as well as
the heritage watch project supported by Leics museums staff and, of course,
the Hathern Community Association and those on the Parish Council trying to make changes.

- Mineral extraction: Gravel extraction should be resisted.
- Development: There is strong feeling against the industrial land encroachment
surrounding Dishley Grange.
The key isues appear to be (a) the protection of the flood plain (b) the retention of the green wedge between Hathern and Loughborough
(c) the Council's own interests in the land (d) the provision of jobs and high tech industry in the arera
and (e) the presevation of Dishley Grange as a monument to someone
who was more than an innovative farmer, Mendel and Darwin knew him as a great
scientist and geneticist. The book is not yet closed on the Local Plan and the County Structure Plan is still evolving.
- Did you know Hathern is famous for terracotta tiles?
